Breaking Barriers: My Journey Toward Employment Success

In Breaking Barriers: My Journey Toward Employment Success, University of Missouri–St. Louis student Cooper Howard shares his inspiring path through education and vocational growth. He will reflect on his time in the SUCCEED Program, highlight his current career achievements, and discuss his goals for the future. Cooper will speak candidly about the obstacles he—and many others with disabilities—face in pursuing education and meaningful employment. Through his story, he hopes to raise awareness about these challenges, inspire understanding, and encourage others with disabilities to keep striving and never give up.

About Cooper

Originally from Bellingham, Washington, Cooper Howard moved to Missouri to attend the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where he was accepted into the SUCCEED Program through the Office of Inclusive Post-Secondary Education. He was awarded the Paul Meyer Memorial Scholarship, which has allowed him to attend conferences across the country and share his personal experiences—both in life and as part of the SUCCEED program. Most recently, he spoke at the National Down Syndrome Conference in Texas.

Cooper currently works an on-campus job, where he collects tickets and helps behind the concession stand. He has a deep interest in archaeology and history, inspired by his admiration for the fictional character Indiana Jones. His goal is to become a history teacher and pursue archaeology on the side. To reach this dream, he plans to double major in archaeology and history.

In his free time, Cooper enjoys researching archaeology, exploring haunted places, and watching The X-Files and Supernatural. He also loves spending time with his girlfriend, hanging out with friends on campus, and playing with his dog Muffin when he’s back home in Washington.
