Course Summary
Employment resources, including those tailored for individuals with disabilities, provide essential support for job seekers and career advancement. Follow-Along supports are considered an essential service to maintain employment for individuals with disabilities, resources often include guidance on disability benefits, which may cover financial assistance, healthcare, vocational rehabilitation, and workplace accommodations. These benefits aim to support independent living and successful integration into the workforce. Together, these tools empower individuals to navigate the job market, secure meaningful employment, and achieve their professional goals while addressing unique challenges.

Supports should be tailored to the individual being supported and unique to their situation, this is why it is of great importance that support specialists learn about all facets of employment and confidently problem solve any scenario that comes their way.

An employment support specialist can check the individual’s referral paperwork, ask the individual directly and request a copy of their award letter, or contact a benefits planner for assistance in requesting the information.

SSI is a needs-based program with income and asset limits, while SSDI is an entitlement program based on prior work history and contributions to Social Security through payroll taxes.

To qualify for FMLA, employees must work for a covered employer, have worked for at least 12 months, and have logged at least 1,250 hours during the previous year.

To qualify for unemployment benefits in Missouri an employee must lose their job through no fault of their own OR they quit for good cause related to the work or the employer. Also, an employee must meet certain wage thresholds to show a history of working.
